Session Descriptions
Open Recreational Play
Appropriate for beginner to advanced players. Open courts with “Rec Centre/Jubilee” style play.
After each game (to 11) players must integrate any waiting players onto their court.
Hosts can define how players are initially assigned to courts and how players enter and come off courts once a game is complete. (for example the gym may be divided into skill levels with waiting players integrating into their skill level). This is where your DUPR rating really comes into play.
The intention is to have all players integrated into play (at their appropriate level) and play with different players during the session.
* Players who are wishing to play exclusively together must "Book Your Own Court". (See below)
Fabulous Friday
Appropriate for beginner to low intermediate (2.0-2.99 rated) players. Your host will ensure that you switch partners for every game to keep the social fun rolling. One of the most popular sessions that will help you to integrate into our pickleball community.
SUPER SOCIAL (Rec Play)
Having (up to 6) extra players makes for great match ups and varying games. Both the Host and the players will be involved in mixing up players for fun games.
DUPR (Competitive Play)
Appropriate for novice (players with some playing experience) to advanced players.
Players will be assigned courts with other players based on similar DUPR ratings or by estimated skill level if the player is non-rated. Doubles groups will be 4 or 5 players. Singles groups will be 2-3 players per court. Full court singles may be played
Round Robin play. Score sheets will be provided to designate who plays who. Scores will be recorded and entered in APA’s Club DUPR app.
YOU MUST BE IN THE DUPR CLUB – Log in to www.mydupr.com or the DUPR app. On the bottom bar click "Play", “Clubs”, search “Abbotsford Pickleball DUPR Club”, click “Join Club”.
Competitive Play - (formerly: Competitive Non-DUPR)
Players will be placed on courts based on skill level/rating. Hosts will define the method of play such as round robin, timed mixer, timed S+G etc. No scores are recorded.
Silver and Gold
Appropriate for novice (players with some playing experience) to advanced players.
Players are placed on court by the host (placement methods vary). Games are timed. After each game Winners move up a court and split, Losers move down a court and split to play their next game.
Skills, Drills & Coaching - BEGINNER
How to hold your paddle, footwork, basic court strategy, serves and serve returns will be covered.
Skills, Drills & Coaching - INTERMEDIATE
Appropriate for higher level players (rating: 2.75-3.75). Focus on isolating skills to improve specific shots and strategies. These sessions will help you build your skills. Take out red booking criteria because it is no longer required.
Ladder Leagues- Women's and Men's
Appropriate for higher level players.
A separate men's and women's league will run weekly over an 8 week period. Scores will be accumulated over this time, and placement on the court each week will be by accumulated score. Hosts will define how the ladder points are accumulated. A cup will be awarded to the highest men’s score as well as the highest woman’s score over the 8 weeks.
There will be prizes for the second and third highest scores, as well as for the highest average score (you must have attended at least 5 sessions to be entered into the highest average score competition).
Mens' and Ladies' Night
Social play appropriate for all levels of players. Host may change format from session to session, but you will be guaranteed to have a fun time. You will have to book early as this is one of our most popular sessions.
Mixer – Court placement by skill level/rating. Round Robin style play with similarly skilled players (usually 8 players across 2 courts but can vary). Match up sheet provided – no scores recorded.
Set Doubles (Mens, Ladies, Mixed) – Partner up and play as a pair for the entire session. Initial court placement based on partners combined ratings. Host to determine style of play. Sign up is done as a pair.
Skills and Drills - Beginner Appropriate for Beginner to low intermediate level players (rating: 2.0-2.74). Focus on isolating skills to improve specific shots and strategies. These sessions will help you build your skills.
Beginner and New Player Rec – Appropriate for newer players. Rec style play – Host will be on hand to answer questions and help with play
Book Your Own Court (BYOC)
You asked, we delivered! BYOC (book your own court) is now available. Reserve a court for a two hour time slot for you and your APA friends exclusive use. $20 per court for two hours of paddle tapping! Dink, drive or drill to your heart’s content. One person books the court and must provide your fellow paddle tappers names. APA members only. Check the calendar for available dates.
All players must be registered with Pickleball Canada, Pickleball BC, and the APA.
Beginners Lesson and Orientation
This session is 2.5 hours in length and involves the following:
1. Orientation
A tour of the AgRec facility showing the participants where to locate the AED,
washrooms, equipment storage areas and how to properly set up the nets and
other court side equipment. This is then followed by a review of handout
material that includes the basic pickleball rules, AgRec safety, expectations,
etiquette and general rules of play/conduct. Also included is information on how
to join the required organizations, book play sessions, DUPR, player ratings and
recommendations on the various sessions offered at AgRec.
2. Beginner Pickleball lessons
For approximately 2 hours the participants are shown all the basic aspects of
playing Pickleball and given plenty of practice time, drills and coaching to learn
and understand the various strokes ( ground, volley, dinks ), serves and service
rules, scoring, game play, strategies and tips.
