Pickleball Self-Rating Chart Descriptors
We have had some confusion over the new descriptors for our morning play. With the changes to play categories our courts are still not being fully utilized during morning club time as players are unclear where they best fit. We hope these more specific descriptors will help you understand where you best fit in our club play.
Recreational 2.0- 2.5
Players enjoy the game, may miss simple shots or may not be able to move quickly enough or predict where the ball is going. Have more consistent long shots, but may hesitate to play at the Non Volley Zone. (Kitchen Line). Not interested in competitive play.
Intermediate/Basic 2.5-3.0
Moved beyond recreational play. Have played both indoor & outdoors with a variety of players, may be learning some strategies of the game. Some unpredictable shots. Good at serving & returning most balls. Consistently remembering the 2 bounce rule.
Intermediate/Advanced 3.0-3.25
Have played against a variety of skill levels. Beginning to think more about planning shots and court positioning, not just reacting to the ball. May get stuck deep in the court during rallies. Have entered local tournaments at a 3.0 level.
Advanced Plus 3.5+
Have played confidently with more competitive players. More able to strategize on shot selection while playing. Move to the NVZ consistently in competitive play. Have entered a number of tournaments in mixed and gender doubles at 3.5 and above.
NOW WHAT?
As we continue to fine tune these changes we will be adjusting SUG with these new descriptors. Please make sure you are signing up in the appropriate category to allow all of our members to play their best pickleball. If you are signing up for play that is above your level please adjust your choices according to these new descriptors. If you are not sure please feel free to call and chat about what session may be best for you.
Remember it is an easy game to learn, but very challenging to master. Which is what keeps us all playing!
WAYS TO GET BETTER AT PICKLEBALL (not just playing with better players)
- Watch ideas for skills and drills on Youtube or Instagram (Better Pickleball, That Pickleball Guy, Briones Pickleball
- Practice more than you play - focus on specific skills
- Take 10-15 minutes before you start your game to practice a few skills (Serves/Returns, 3rd Shots, the Soft Game, Fast hands at the net) Then start to play the game.
- Watch Pro Pickleball on YouTube or Pickleball TV and listen to the commentators comments. (PPA, APP, MLP)
Court play in evenings
We have agreed with the city to leave 2 or 3 public courts open in the evening. If you are playing on the public courts please model for public players who are waiting to take turns. Play one game & then come off, wait your turn for the next court. Our members do not take priority over public players, except where we have booked specific courts and times with the city according to our schedule.
