The Basics
One of the great things about pickleball, compared to other sports, is the low start-up costs.
Paddle: Pickleball paddles look a bit like an oversized ping-pong paddle. They are generally about 15 inches long and 8 inches wide with a fairly smooth, solid surface. There are hundreds of paddles to choose from differing in dimensions, materials, weight, etc. Once you’ve decided the sport is for you there are many websites that can help you decide which is right for you.
Note: The Fieldhouse has pickleball paddles available for use.
Ball: Similar to wiffle balls (but slightly smaller), pickleballs are lightweight seamless perforated plastic ball with holes. There are indoor and outdoor balls. Outside balls re heavier with harder plastic and smaller holes. These features allow for increased durability, wind resistance, and bounce. In contrast, indoor balls have softer and lighter plastic with larger holes to provide more accurate shots and a better bounce on indoor surfaces.
Footwear: If you are playing indoors you’ll need a non-scuffing pair of shoes. Court shoes are recommended as they support the lateral movements you’ll be making.
