PRC Self Rating Scale / Session Categories


BEGINNER

  • Is learning the court lines, scoring, and basic rules of the game
  • Able to serve to the correct receiving opponent
  • Attempts to use both forehand and backhand ground strokes
  • Attempts to dink
  • Rallies are limited

RECREATIONAL

  • Recreational level should also possess all the Beginner skills
  • Knowledge of the basic rules is evident
  • Serves with accuracy
  • Working on approaching the NVZ line (non-volley zone line; kitchen)
  • Able to hit a forehand and backhand ground strokes and volleys with some control
  • Able to sustain a short dink rally with players of equal ability
  • Sustains longer rallies, but not at a fast pace
  • Court coverage is improving

INTERMEDIATE I

  • Intermediate Level I should also possess all the Recreational skills
  • Demonstrates control, placement, and depth of serves
  • Moves quickly to the NVZ line; does not back up unnecessarily
  • Able to hit medium paced forehand and backhand ground strokes and volleys with a moderate level of control
  • Able to sustain a dink rally with some control
  • Attemping to use third shot drop during match play
  • Exhibits correct court positioning and how to move as a team

INTERMEDIATE II

  • Intermediate Level II should also possess all the Intermediate Level I skills
  • Able to place serves with power and accuracy
  • Is comfortable playing at the NVZ line
  • Consistent and dependable strokes, including control of direction and depth on both forehand and backhand shots
  • Able to sustain dink rally with control, height and placement of shot
  • Uses third shot strategies – drops, drives and lobs – to gain advantage at the net
  • Able to block and return fast, hard volleys
  • Can sustain a short volley session at the net with placement and control
  • Uses spin shots with some success
  • Understands the difference between a hard and so\ game; knows when to use each
  • Partner communication and teamwork are evident
  • Basic knowledge of stacking and when to use it

ADVANCED I

  • Advanced Level I should also possess all the Intermediate Level II skills
  • Serves with power and accuracy and can also vary the speed and spin of the serve
  • Can play aggressively at the NVZ line
  • Can successfully execute all shot types; uses power and spin, can control the depth and direction of their shots, and can handle pace
  • Makes good choices in shot selection; uses dinks, third shot strategies, and lobs to set up offensive situations
  • Can hit third shot drop from baseline with greater success
  • Attempts to use a variety of strategies to slow down or change the pace of the game
  • Able to create coverage gaps and then hit to those gaps
  • Understands strategy and can adjust style of play and game plan according to the opponent’s strengths and weaknesses and court position
  • Aware of partner’s position to play as a team
  • Has ability to change position in an offensive manner (switching)
  • Anticipates the opponent’s shots resulting in good court positioning
  • Beginning to use stacking with greater ease

ADVANCED II

  • Advanced Level II should possess all the Advance Level I skills, but with greater consistency, dependability, & control
  • Very comfortable playing at the NVZ line with patience to make accurate shots
  • Consistent and dependable volleys, ground strokes, dinks, and third shot drops
  • Initiates and maintains a sustained dink exchange at the net to elicit a “put away” shot
  • Consistently executes a third shot drop from the baseline to approach the net
  • Controls play at the NVZ line by keeping their opponent back if at the baseline
  • Able to change a fast-paced strategy to a slow one and vice versa
  • Consistent court positioning to cover gaps and angles
  • Communicates and moves effectively with partner
  • Solid understanding of stacking and can use it effectively
  • Very few unforced errors

LEVELLED PLAY

This is a chance to play with like-skilled players. Games will be in a timed round robin format. Courts will be seeded according to a player's skill by the facilitators who will do their best to place you on the appropriate court.
