Introduction
Registration is limited to 24 players and 4 spares. Each team includes 2 male and 2 female players.
Note: If less than 24 register, the event can run with fewer teams: 20 players for a 5 team event and a minimum of 16 players for a 4 team event. Gender parity will be observed, so, for example, If 12 males sign up but only 8 females register, then the last 4 males to sign up would NOT be guaranteed a spot and the event would be run with 4 teams.
We will start at 5:00 pm with a short review of rally scoring and Team play.
If you have time before please review “rally scoring”, “MLP format” on our website and check out a few MLP matches on YouTube (go back to last season when rally scoring was used - the current season is using the normal side-out scoring).
Here’s what you need to know:
- Rally scoring will be used throughout, so all team members should think about which side of the court they prefer:
Left handers should be on the right side, in mixed generally the female is right, otherwise just put your stronger forehand on the left side.
- We start with a round robin where each team completes a match with each of the other teams.
- Each match consists of 4 doubles games, rotating the SAME doubles teams in the SAME order each time. With each team consisting of 2 men and 2 women, the order will be MENS, WOMENS, MIXED, MIXED.
Doubles combinations will be selected by the team Captains before tournament day.
- Each game is worth 1 point. After the 4 games, if it is a 2 - 2 tie, there is a tiebreaker.
- Tiebreakers will be 1/2 court (i.e. “skinny”) singles where all team members rotate every 4 points using the same order: Male, Male, Female, Female.
- Round robin games are to a hard 11 with a freeze at 10. Tie breakers go to a hard 12 with no freeze.
(“Hard” means “win by 1”, “Freeze” means you have to win the last point ON your serve.)
- After the round robin, we move to playoff games which are to 25 points with a freeze at 24 with the four doubles groups rotating every 5 points in the same order as in the round robin. After the round robin is completed, the top 4 teams will move right to a final play off game: with the bottom 2 teams playing for Bronze and top 2 teams playing for Gold/Silver.
NOTE: IF PLAY IS RUNNING LATE, THE POINTS AND FORMAT MAY CHANGE.
Volunteers who are used to rally scoring please help with calling the score, checking for the correct server and announcing side outs.
Let me know if there are any concerns or questions.
Cheers, Philip
