2024 Macdonald Realty Victoria Classic wraps up successful tournament at Pearkes Rec Centre

June, 11, 2024 (Victoria, BC) The Macdonald Realty Victoria Classic 2024 was held at GR Pearkes Recreation Centre, June 7-9. 235 players registered for one of the year’s marquee pickleball events on Vancouver Island.

Connie McCann, president, VRPA said “VRPA held their most successful tournament to date. Our title sponsor Macdonald Realty, a local company plus a superb group of court sponsors and local suppliers, as well as Pickleball Depot ensured that this tournament fed and supported the 235 players. This tournament has gone from strength to strength and next year will be bigger and better. We want to thank the over 45 volunteers who made our tournament a success. We are especially thankful to our tournament director Krista Josselyn and our Event Coordinator, Cathy Wong.”

The Berwick UVic Women’s Pickleball Tournament took place on April 13th and was a huge success with 140 women competing. Thank you to all the volunteers who made the event possible and to our trainee referees who officiated at the matches. Results can be found here. Attached is the Photo Gallery. Macdonald Realty Classic 2024. I left in mid April for a visit to my Mother, then, a train to New York City, a crossing of the North Atlantic in the beautiful QM2 and a full month of campervanning England and Scotland. I am blessed to be able to leave this country and know that there is a superb number of folks who keep VRPA moving forward. I am commending to you, the members, the work of Vice President Tessa Graham and all the VRPA Board members who had to do more work in my absence and our new Program Coordinator, Maureen Vear. Then, there was the work that Krista Josselyn, tournament director and Cathy Wong, Event Coordinator did. Outstanding work and I am eternally grateful for the Board, Krista and Cathy for making this the most successful tournament ever.

Wain Road. Our partner association in North Saanich, SPPA, has been working hard to get those courts back open. The latest news: The Sound Study is complete and SPPA has requested to formally present to North Saanich council. The process is – file the application, the application goes before Council and Council decides if a group can present. Monday June 17^th at 7 pm, North Saanich Council is considering the application to present by SPPA. This application is to put the new information, the Sound Study before the Council and to ask for re-opening of the courts based on this new information. Please consider attending this Monday night meeting to support SPPA in their efforts.

My Favourite News Item this Week.From the Toronto Star, Wed. June 12^th: “First Lady Jill Biden is kicking off outreach to older voters, an effort that blends rallies & phone banks with social events like… pickleball games”. I will be using this one at the Council tables!

Public Service Week. Pickleball event Thursday June 13^th. For the 2^nd year, VRPA provided pickleball to Public Service employees. This event was led by Bev De Haitre and her team, Dwayne, Laurie and Tony H. The lead person from the Public Service Week told VRPA that this was the favourite activity last year! Thank you to Bev and her team.
