Now that the dust has settled, the nets are packed away, and most of us have regained feeling in our feet, we’d like to extend a sincere thank you to everyone who participated in the 2026 Macdonald Realty VRPA Tournament.
What an incredible weekend it was.
Over three days at G.R. Pearkes Recreation Centre, 273 players took to the courts representing a remarkable range of ages and experience levels. Our players ranged in age from 15 to 81 years old, proving once again that pickleball is one of the few sports where teenagers and retirees can compete under the same roof and both leave with a slightly different version of what happened on match point. One of the highlights of the weekend was seeing a 76-year-old earn a spot on the podium. It's a wonderful reminder that in pickleball, experience, determination, and a well-placed dink can still outperform youth and enthusiasm.
This tournament would not have been possible without the support of our sponsors. A heartfelt thank you to Macdonald Realty, Tower Fence, Peninsula Co-op and all of our prize sponsors for helping make this event a reality. Their support allows us to continue growing the sport and creating opportunities for players to compete close to home.
We would also like to recognize the volunteers who made the tournament happen. Throughout the weekend, volunteers handled registration, setup, takedown, troubleshooting, and approximately 4,000 questions that began with, "Excuse me, do you know where...?". Hundreds of hours were invested before the first serve was struck, and many more were contributed throughout the weekend. Their dedication is what makes events like this possible.
A huge thank you also goes to our referees. They brought knowledge, patience, and professionalism to the courts throughout the weekend. Their support helped keep matches organized and moving smoothly — and allowed players to focus on what really mattered: playing pickleball and not trying to remember if the score is 8-6-1 or 6-8-2.
Of course, no tournament is complete without a few surprises along the way. While we’d all love a perfectly smooth event where everything runs exactly according to plan, that wouldn’t leave us with any stories to tell. Tournaments have a way of reminding us that perfection is overrated and adaptability is a valuable life skill. Thank you for your patience, flexibility, and good humour whenever the tournament threw us a curveball.
Most importantly, thank you to the players. Whether you were competing for a medal, challenging yourself in a new division, reconnecting with friends, or simply enjoying a weekend of pickleball, you are what makes this community special. The sportsmanship, encouragement, and camaraderie displayed throughout the weekend reminded us why we love hosting these events.
Congratulations to all medalists and participants. We hope you left with great memories, a few hard-fought rallies, and perhaps only a minor collection of new aches and pains.
As we begin planning for next year, we’re already exploring ways to make the event even bigger and better. New ideas, new opportunities, and continued growth of the tournament are all on the table. We are excited about what the future may hold and look forward to building on the success of this year’s event.
On behalf of the Victoria Regional Pickleball Association, thank you for making this tournament such a success. We look forward to seeing you back on the courts soon.
See you at the kitchen line,
Krista Josselyn
