2025 Rally Point Scoring for Doubles
Under the 2025 Official Rules, rally scoring is an approved option for Singles and Round Robin Doubles tournament play. Games follow the standard rules and practices for traditional play with certain rule modifications that are unique to rally scoring.
When rally scoring for doubles is used, there is only one server per service rotation and service after a side out always begins on the right side.
- A point is awarded to the winner of each rally, except the game-winning point, which can only be scored when serving. A receiver who wins a rally will score a point if they are not at game point.
- When the server loses a rally or faults, a side out will occur and the receiver scores a point, if not at game point. The receiver switches position with their partner based on their new score.
Examples based on a game to 21 points, win by two:
a. Team A is serving at 14-13 and Team B wins the rally. A point is awarded to Team B, a side out occurs, the Team B partners switch position and Team B serves next at 14-14.
b. Team A is serving at 20-19 and wins the rally. Team A is awarded a point and wins the match, 21-19.
c. Team A is serving at 19-20 and Team B wins the rally. A side out occurs with no point awarded because Team B is at game point but was not serving. The Team B partners do not switch position since no point was awarded. Team B serves next at 20-19. - The server will change position (side of the court) consistent with their new score after they earn a point.
- After a side out, service always starts on the right-hand side of the court.
