  • City of Delta wants fair allocation of outdoor Pickleball courts

link to the Delta Optimist article

DPA has responded to the City of Delta and The Delta Optimist regarding an article quoting a council memo.  DPA does not support the policy of 50% of the courts for the public at all times. We have never stated this.  We estimate we have far more than 70% of the pickleball players as members in Delta and far less than 40% of the court times.  Pickleball is a social sport and there are times when it is beneficial to have more than 50% of the court times for a short period of time, as with many other sports, and then ensure the public has reasonable access for most times.  Further we need courts to offer lessons on the outdoor courts and welcome all members from Delta, at very low yearly membership fee.  Our yearly fee is the same as a 5 hour permit and insurance from the City of Delta.  As far as we know, we have the only trained pickleball instructors offering lessons on outdoor courts in Delta.  We want to grow the sport for all of Delta. The City of Delta has made a significant investment building excellent pickleball courts and we wish to see them well used and enjoyed by all people from Delta.  For the most part, this is happening now but we are working with Parks, Recreation & Culture to make it even better.  Our aim is to get people off of the couch and keep them out of the hospital.  Warning, this sport is addictive!;-)
