Markham Pickleball Club

Welcome

If you are new to our site WELCOME, and if you have been here before then you are aware that 2021 was the first year  of MPC and we played at The Best Parking Lot Pickleball Courts in Canada. (picture from October 31st 2021)  I believe all members would agree that it was a huge success and it happened because of an amazing group of volunteers and exceptional members. As we get ready to usher in 2022, MPC is continuing to evolve. The goal is to provide an inclusive, fun place to play pickleball for all level of players from beginner to pro. The year will start again at the Markham Civic Centre Parking Lot. When the new park in Cornell ceases to be a construction zone, MPC will  move into 8 new dedicated, beautiful pickleball courts for outdoor play.

For 2022 in addition to regular scheduled hosted play 7 days a week we hope to introduce a  members ladder, clinics for all levels of play, intro to Pickleball Clinics on a regular basis, a junior program, special & social events throughout the summer and a year end members tournament. As a member run club we are always looking for ideas and VOLUNTEERS.

Club Hours* (subject to WEATHER)

Markham Civic Centre Courts

Monday to Sunday - Hosted Play: 10am - 1pm

Tuesday & Thursday Evenings - Hosted play 5:30pm to 8:30pm

NOTE: Club hours on the temporary courts are made possible by the VOLUNTEER HOSTS. Please understand that they have tough decisions to make because of weather. If the courts are wet there can be no MPC club play (Insurance dictates this). People can play with their own nets at their own risk.

CORNELL COURTS (Opening Date TBD)

MPC knows you are anxious to play on the new courts. We hope to have a more specific opening date soon. Any dates that you have heard are simply rumours and/or quesses regardless of the source.

Membership 2022

For the 2022 season the BASIC membership fee will be $25 for MPC. This fee will be used to cover administration costs (for playing at the Civic Centre Courts) and to provide funding for some social events during the season. Pickleball Ontario and Pickleball Canada have kept their fees at $10 each. Total membership is $45 dollars for the year. This membership allows you to participate in all club play sessions, events, and functions.

Renewal or New members can join MPC by going to MarkhamPickleballClub.ca and clicking on the Join-Renew button. Follow the instructions to renew/join your MPC membership and also renew/join Pickleball Canada and Pickleball Ontario. Membership in Pickleball Ontario and Pickleball Canada provides insurance coverage for both the club and each individual member and is needed for MPC to run. In addition there are numerous other benefits that can be found at the association Websites.

Note: When MPC moves to the new dedicated courts in Cornell we will be able to increase the dedicated hours for club member play as well as improve the quantity and quality of the programs offered to members. With these new courts also comes obligations and costs both short and long term that have to be accounted for by membership fees. As a result when the date to move into the new courts have been confirmed there will be a surcharge to all members for the remainder of the season on the new courts. The board is still working on these fees and they will be announced as soon as possible. For planning purposes budget $75, which for the July to October period will work out to about 50 cents per hour for most members.

update - August 2, 2022

Some of you have been asking about this year’s fees for playing at Cornell Park. Given we are now more than half through our outdoor season and given we may not be on the courts until the fall, there will be no additional charges to play. Next year will be a different story but for this year, MPC members will not pay any additional fees.

Covid 19 Protocols

All members must check in with the court supervisor every day they attend MPC & prior to playing. During this check in the court supervisor will record your attendance and check for your completion and emailing of the online covid 19 screening tool. It is a CITY requirement that every player must complete the Covid 19 screening tool every day before they play.

NOTE: The Covid Screening expires at midnight daily, completion and email must be completed the day of play, not the night before.

Please use the COVID-19 screening tool on this government website https://covid-19.ontario.ca/screening/customer/. The survey is very quick. When you finish, select Email Result and send to C19screening@markhampickleballclub.ca  before you come to play. These saved emails will allow us to report COVID-19 status and participation to York Region Public Health.

While we will no longer be using GPN for covid tracking, we are keeping the MPC network active. This is an excellent place to organize groups of players or simply organize a game with other members. If you still haven't joined GPN but are interested. Markham Pickleball Club - Global Pickleball Network . This is a free membership.

Volunteers Wanted/Needed

As we get ready to move to the new courts in Cornell Park, we recognize that we need your help to make this a great experience for all of our members.

Social Committee

We are looking for club members who are interested in helping to plan, organize and run social events for the club. Our first event will be held on Canada Day which is coming up really soon. After this we need to plan a schedule for club events through the summer and into the fall. So, if your passion is planning and organizing, please speak to Sharon Mansfield or Peter Milovanovic.

Court Hosts

We have a great group of court hosts who have been supporting play at the Civic Centre courts. We hope that many of you will continue to support our club when we move to the new courts but there will be more opportunities for club members to volunteer as hosts.

There are morning, afternoon and evening slots available. Duties include:

  • Checking the courts to ensure they are safe for play
  • Checking members sign in and show their MPC membership tag
  • Welcoming and assisting new members to the club

If you are interested in Hosting please send an email to info@marhampickleballclub.ca letting us know the preferred days and times you would interested in helping.

Thank you

MPC NETWORKS

MPC strives to be inclusive and provide a welcoming, safe place to play for all people. While we are first a sport club as we all know pickleball has a significant social aspect which is one of the attributes that makes it so compelling. In that regard we have several methods of communicating with members and allowing members to communicate with each other. The first spot is this website where we attempt to have up to-date info on all things MPC. We also have a facebook page https://www.facebook.com/great...  that we encourage you to join. For those of you that use WhatsAPP we have an active MPC chat. Contact Dennis Sue, he is MPC's Whats App MASTER.

Finally we strongly encourage ALL MEMBERS of MPC to set up an account on PickleballBrackets.com and join the MPC club on this site. We will be using PB Brackets for ladder leagues pus other events when we move to the new Cornell courts. Also if you have any interest in playing in tournaments this is the site for the majority of Canadian tournaments. The direct link for MPC on Pickleball Brackets is https://pickleballbrackets.com... You can also always find this link on the home page contents directory under Pickleball Brackets.

If members want or feel that they would like to see MPC represented on places like Instagram etc then that can be arranged if there are members that will volunteer to manage those sites.

Outdoor Play at Cornell Park 2022

There have been lots of questions about outdoor play and rumours about what is happening with the courts. We had hoped to have registration for outdoor play active on the website, but we are still in discussions with the City and it is impossible to finalize member pricing until we have completed the process.

We have been working with the City team to establish a policy for pickleball clubs in Markham and to draft an agreement between Markham Pickleball Club and the City regarding the new dedicated courts at Cornell Park. The final step in this process will be later this month when MPC board members and the Recreation Department will present the policy and proposal to the Markham City Council for approval. We will have more information for you soon.

The rumours about a delay in moving to the new courts in Cornell Park are true. While the courts will likely be ready by late April the park is behind schedule and we will not be allowed to access the courts while it is still a construction zone. The new opening date is early summer. To accommodate MPC for pickleball once the weather allows, the City is planning to provide temporary courts possibly in the Civic Centre parking lot - where we played last year. Keep an eye on the Facebook page and/or the website for updates. We hope you have found places to play indoors and look forward to seeing you on the courts as soon as the weather and the city allows.
