CLUB SKILL LEVELS
Club Skill Levels and moving between levels.
WWPB Skill Levels in Detail!
- WWPB provides opportunities for both social and competitive play.
- Members can play in any event in the Calendar that includes their Club Level.
- Existing members maintain their Club Skill Level from one season to the next.
- New members self-rate for their Club Skill Level, (see below)
- Members can request to move up a Club Skill Level, but must follow the assessment program outlined below.
- Members will NOT be moved down a Club Skill Level unless they request it.
- WWPB assessment program allows members to move club skill levels based on their ability in actual match play. There is no Ratings Committee, as with some clubs.
Existing Members:
If you are a renewing member, your Club Skill Level from last year defines your current Club Skill Level. You will continue to play at that Level until you successfully move to a higher Level via our assessment program.
New Members:
When you join WWPB as a new member, you will be asked to self-assess. Use the high-level rating descriptions as a guide to help you choose the Club Skill Level that best reflects your skill level. Alternatively, you can ask someone who you believe knows your skill level. After you join and select your Club Skill Level, the following will then apply to you:
- If you choose Levels 2.0 to 3.25, you will be placed at that level with no further requirements.
- If you choose a level higher than 3.25 , then:
- New members self rating at 3.5 will be asked to go through our assessment program
- Returning members who have been playing at the 3.5 or 4.0 level can continue self-rated. If you haven't played at 4.0 before but you have a 4.0+ Dupr, then play at the 4.0 level. These sessions may be changed to Dupr gated if wwpb deems necessary.
- Members at Dupr 4.5 to 6.0, the PlayTime Scheduler sessions will be Dupr gated. You must have a Dupr of 4.5 or higher to sign up in PTS
Skills Assessment Process:
This process applies to movement between all levels up to 4.0.
- Beginners- play some games for the summer (2-3 months) then move to Novice, no testing.
- Novice 2.0 to Intermediate Rec.3.0 - testing required.
- Intermediate Rec. 3.0 to Intermediate Competitive 3.25 - testing required.
- Intermediate Competitive 3.25 to Advanced 3.5 - testing required.
How our assessment process works.
The aspiring player will play 6 games with a group of 6 different current players of the desired level. Three courts will be used, played indoor if possible.
For example, an Intermediate Competitive player would mix with 3 advanced players, rotating advanced players each game. The score will be recorded for each game. Then the intermediate player will rotate to a different group of advanced players and play another 3 games. The scores will be recorded and tallied. In total, the intermediate player will have the opportunity to play with 6 different advanced players. The intermediate player must achieve 42 points out of the possible 66 points. It averages out to 7 points a game. If you can score 42 points, you can move up to advance.
How do I get Assessed?
Please email info@winnipegwestpickleball.club if you are interested in being assessed and you will be notified of the next possible assessment date. Everyone who wants to be assessed will have the opportunity. If you need to work on skills first, maybe hold off in your request.
Levels Q&A
What are skill levels and why do we use them ?
Skill Levels are a way of ensuring that members get to play with other members at or near their own skill level. For example, if you are rated at a 3.0 Club Level, you will play in the 3.0 events with other 3.0 players.
What is the difference between Level and Rating?
A Club skill Level determines which Events you can register for in the Weekly Schedule in the Calendar. A rating assumes you have played in local, provincial or national tournaments that use Dupr rating, which is Pickleball Canada's official rating system.
If I do poorly in the Assessment, will I be moved down a Club Level?
NO. We will not be moving anyone down a Club Level unless the member requests it. You would continue to play at your current pre-assessment level.
In my member profile, there are three ratings origin choices (S = Self Rated, C = Club Rated, and T = Tournament Rated). What’s the difference between these, and why have three?
When you first join, you are Self Rated. Then when you are assessed, your performance assessment based rating (club) will be used which will determine which group of players you will be joining in PlayTime Scheduler. Tournament rating is now the same as your Dupr rating. Dupr rated is an elective field where you can enter your tournament rating if you have one.
I’m renewing my membership. At what level do I play?
If you are a renewing member, you have a Club Skill Level from last year that defined your current Club Skill Level. You will continue to play at that Level until you successfully move to a higher Level.
Are there clinics available for me to improve my skills?
